NaREC Case Study
Customer: NaREC in conjunction with One North East
Location: UK Wide
Application: Solar Thermal School Demonstration Units
Number of Units: 85
Customer Background
NaREC is an independent, cross-disciplined research and development platform serving the energy industry worldwide.
In partnership with industry, NaREC is achieving new breakthroughs in the design, deployment and commercialisation of sustainable energy technologies, shaping the future through innovation.
Scheme Background
Newminster Middle School in Morpeth is just one of 85 schools who received a solar thermal demonstration unit which they will be able to use together with an interactive website and specifically written key stage three curriculum support materials. Together these tools will encourage practical measurement and data-recording activities and help children to understand the impact and relevance of sustainability in everyday life. The project will allow children to witness first hand how renewable technologies can be applied in their schools – and by inference in their own homes.
Explore Renewables is a free initiative now open to all publicly funded middle and secondary schools in the North East. Carillion Energy Services are very proud to provide the school units which are designed to provide schools with a hands-on way of understanding renewable energy, as well as aiding practical learning in sciences, maths, design and geography.
As part of the project, Carillion Energy Services also installed full scale solar thermal systems and a PV system in two local schools
Demonstration Unit Details
The unit includes a 0.5m2 flat plate solar thermal collector, solar storage tank, 12V circulating pump, built-in drainback tank and differential temperature controller. A built in rechargeable battery powers the circulation pump and controller and the unit is fully automatic in use. Water is poured into a trough at the and the unit can be wheeled outside into the sunlight where it will heat up the water in the tank in a couple of hours
